Styling a Web Page with CSS

Mini-Course Overview
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a technology that has become essential in the development visually attractive web pages. CSS works closely with HTML, and the browser, to give you a high degree of control over the placement and appearance of text, images, fonts and background colors, to name a few things. In this mini-course you learn how to improve the appearance of a web page by adding a stylesheet. In this course you learn not only how to manually define styles directly in the web page, but also how to incorporate third party stylesheets. You also learn about responsive design: a web page design methodology in which a single web page will fit properly into any environment: browser, tablet, smart phone, or whatever. Finally, you learn about Bootstrap, one of the most widely used CSS technologies.

Using JavaScript in a Web Page

Mini-Course Overview
In contrast to PHP, which runs on the server, JavaScript is a scripting language that runs locally on the browser, smart phone, or local device. JavaScript has a syntax and structure derived from C language, and is thus readily familiar to PHP developers. In this mini-course you learn how to use JavaScript to make a web page respond to mouse events (e.g. mouse clicks, hovering the mouse, etc.). In addition you are introduced to jQuery, one of the most powerful and widely used JavaScript frameworks. Finally, there is a brief introduction to react.js, a popular JavaScript front-end.

Choosing a Programming Language

Mini-Course Overview
There are many many different programming languages available today, any of which could be used to build a web application. There is often a disconnect in the IT media between what languages are considered popular vs what languages are being used. Choosing a programming language and sticking with it is important not only for the immediate objective of building a website, but for the impact this choice can have on the success of your long-term career. In this mini-course you learn about the two main styles of programming language: scripted and compiled. You are then given an overview of the most commonly used languages as well as up-and-coming languages. Finally, you are introduced to sources of reliable data to help you choose a programming language.
