5 steps to restoring asphaltic roofs with GAF Silicone Roof Coatings

1. Qualify the roof
  • Ensure the asphaltic roof is clean, dry, and tight
  • Perform moisture scan/identify all wet areas
  • Conduct adhesion test to ensure proper adhesion of coating

2. Prep the substrate

3. Detail seams, flashings, and penetrations
  • Treat all seams using GAF Premium Brush-Grade Acrylic Flashing
    - For tight seams, apply GAF Premium Brush-Grade Acrylic Flashing at a rate of 100 linear feet per gallon
    - Loose seams must be three-course with Premium Brush-Grade Acrylic Flashing and 6” GAF Premium Fabric at a rate of 30 linear foot per gallon 
  • Treat all “alligatored” areas, curbs, penetrations, and drains with premium Brush-Grade Acrylic Flashing and 12” GAF Premium Fabric
    - Three-coursed at a rate of 30 linear foot per gallon

4. Apply base coat
  • Apply GAF Acrylic Base Coat or Bleed-Block Base Coat to help improve adhesion of the GAF Acrylic Top Coat and mitigate any asphaltic bleed-through
    - Apply Acrylic Base Coat per the specifications for a 10/15 year warranty1, can be brushed, rolled, or spray-applied

5. Coat the asphaltic roof with acrylic
  • Apply GAF Acrylic Top Coat per the specifications for a 10/15 year limited warranty or guarantee1
    - GAF acrylic can be brushed, rolled, or spray-applied
  • Ensure previous coat has fully dried/cured prior to subsequent coat
    - Do not apply excess of 1.5 gallons per square per coat
  • Consistently check wet mil thickness for uniform coverage
